Marvel has acquired the rights to publish comics based on The Muppet Show from partner organisation Disney.

This summer, the comic book giant will release Disney-Muppets Presents: Meet The Muppets, a 96-page collection of previously-published material by cartoonist Roger Langridge.

"Together with Disney Publishing, we're extremely excited to bring the Muppets to the comics world and continue to grow their audience" said Marvel Entertainment editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.

"Marvel will ensure that Disney-Muppets Presents will be available at all retail segments for its cross-generational fan base. The Muppets are some of the most beloved pop culture icons ever, so we can't wait for fans to experience these great stories from Roger Langridge."

BOOM! Studios previously held the publishing rights to The Muppets. A slate of Langridge's unreleased work based on the property remains in limbo due to the licence changing hands.

"In the best of all possible worlds, I'd like to think that Boom and Marvel can come to some kind of arrangement whereby Marvel can eventually release the work," the cartoonist wrote on his blog.

Disney-Muppets Presents: Meet The Muppets is released in July.
